Why robot PMs pay for themselves
Robots are the most reliable equipment on most floors, which is exactly why they get neglected. They run for years without complaint, so maintenance attention goes to the machines that squeak. Then a reducer that has been running dry for eighteen months fails mid-shift and takes the whole cell down with it.
Nearly every expensive robot failure is preceded by a cheap, visible warning: grease past its interval, backlash opening up on an axis, a dress-pack conductor beginning to chafe, a backup battery at end of life. A PM visit finds those. An unplanned failure finds you.
The economics are not subtle. A scheduled PM is a known, small cost on a date you choose. A reducer failure in a welding cell is a large cost on a date production chooses for you.
What a PM visit covers
Intervals depend on duty cycle, environment, and payload — a robot running three shifts in a weld cell needs attention far more often than one tending a machine in clean conditions on a single shift. The scope of each visit is set to the equipment rather than to a generic calendar.
