Industrial electronic repair

When the motor is fine and the machine still will not run

A large share of the servo motors pulled off machines are healthy. The fault sits in the drive, the encoder, or the cable between them — but the alarm points at the axis, so the motor is what gets removed first. That costs a rebuild that was never needed and leaves the actual fault in the machine.

Treating the drive and feedback electronics as their own discipline is what stops that cycle. A drive that is failing under load will pass a bench power-up and fail again the day it goes back in. Testing under representative load is the only way to prove the repair.

Repair instead of replace

Control electronics go obsolete long before the machines they run. A drive family discontinued a decade ago will still be holding up production somewhere, and when one fails the options are a scarce used unit of unknown history, a control retrofit costing many times the drive, or a component-level repair of the board you already have.

Board-level repair means diagnosing to the failed component rather than swapping assemblies: power semiconductors, capacitors that have dried out, failed gate drive circuitry, degraded connectors. It is usually the fastest and cheapest of the three options, and it keeps the machine on the control system your people already know.

Encoder and feedback work

Encoders and resolvers are the single most misdiagnosed component in a servo system. Symptoms — following error, position drift, hunting at rest, intermittent alarms that clear on a power cycle — all present as motion faults, which sends attention to the motor and the mechanics.

Repair covers the feedback device itself and, critically, its alignment. An encoder that is electrically sound but mechanically misaligned to the rotor will produce commutation problems that look exactly like a failing motor. Getting alignment right on reassembly is what makes the repair hold.
